Papa don't preach

I've been suspiciously away from my blog in recent weeks... Life decided to get unusually busy for me. The strangest thing to occur... my little puppy. Elliot... nearly sired a litter with my sister's dog, Coco.

This was problematic on a number of fronts... the biggest worry came when we were informed that Coco could possibly die giving birth to a litter or possibly die because the litter could be too big for her to carry.

A mad scramble ensued and Coco had to have an emergency doggy-operation to ensure she would be safe. I went ahead and advanced Elliot's neuter appointment and had him snipped this past Monday....

Currently both dogs are at my parents house so that they could be monitored 24-7.

Its unusually quiet here at the house but that should all change when they come back next Tuesday.

Big Birthday Ups

This month has been filled with a number of birthdays... the one I'm rather happy to celebrate today is for my Sister (now roommate) who is turning a tender 25 years of age.

This is the first birthday I will get to spend with her in 12 years... not sure what we'll do this evening. Me'thinks some dinner and drinks are in order tho'.

Happy B. Day Sis.

UGLY Betty

Ok... I don't know how many people caught UGLY Betty this evening but I tuned in after reading a number of glowing reviews of it. The show wasn't quite as funny as I hoped it would be... it is however very unlike anything on TV right now. Ted mentioned to me that the show is based on a hit TV show that aired in Spain (or some other spanish speaking country) called Ugly Lupe or somethin'.

The show debuted in HD glory. Prior to this evening I never paid much attention to actors looking bad in HD. Vanessa Williams quickly changed that when I saw her wrinkly rack on my 65" TV. She however wasn't the scariest actress on screen last night.. that nod goes to Extra's - Ashley Jensen.

OMG did she look like shit in HD.

Anyhoo. Peep it next week.

PodcastFEVER

Ok... so I've been away from the blogg in recent weeks. I've had a couple of crazy dayz lately. Put up two podcasts tho'. One is a LOST related one and you can peep that at www.ekobase.net, the other is another installment of the September29th PopCult Podcast. Peep it by hitting the Podcast link above.

Man Bites DOG

Is there anything better than sweet violence? Watched the black comedyMan Bites Dog this afternoon and have nothing but glowing praise for the movie.

I ran across a recommendation for the movie over at Alex's blog a week or so ago and it finally landed in my mailbox.

If you have a very twisted sense of humor and want to watch beautiful movie about Media & Violence, drop everything you're doing and watch this movie. You'll thank me later.

Star Wars II - Legos

If you're sitting around until November 19th waiting for the Wii to drop, but still wish you had something worthwhile to play, look no further than Legos STAR WARS II.

I picked it up after hearing rave reviews from friends who picked up the first part. I've yet to rock that one out but I may check it out after I'm done rocking this one out.

The game explores the holy trilogy in a creative story play manner. There's no voices or written dialogue in the game so its just you, your Star Wars memories and endless hours of trying to complete the game.

It's two player and it allows you to play without every having to worry about dying.

Anyhoo... i lost a number of hours Friday and Saturday morning playing this game. Purchase this if you have 30 bucks burning a hole in your pocket.

Season 3, Project Runway

With only a handful of weeks left in Season 3 of "Project Runway"... I find myself wondering why I tuned in for the duration of it this fall. They had a "Puck" situation at the start of the competition and they asked someone to leave... They eliminated one of the most promising designers when they asked her to make a garment out of trash. They managed to fly the participants to Paris for a challenge only to have them turn around immediately to go home. (despite them letting go of a character I didn't care for... it was uncalled for and they had a week to play with this year seeing how someone got booted)

Anyhoo... I'm going to tune in tonight in hopes of finding someone to champion to the end. Knowing my luck this season, they'll get the boot tonight.

Just when you thought they couldn't sink lower... they jumped the hammerhead shark and brought back 2 contestants who were previously eliminated to make the last challenge more interesting.

.worst season ever.

Tuesdays : Offical Movie Nite for Alamo City Rollie

So... I found out this evening that my sister has a crazy hard-on for "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC. She took over the living room to watch the show in HD this evening. Having never seen an episode of "dancing with the stars" I entertained the idea of sitting in for a little bit when it started.

Someone informed me that Emmit Smith and Anderson Cooper were going to be dancing on the show... I later found out that it was Tucker Carlson, not Cooper who was selling out in hopes of being more human than partisan prick.

I only caught 2 performances... I didn't really understand what the appeal was. The cover band was horrendus... and the broadcast wasn't in true HD.

Oh SHIT. Before I forget... what happened to Joey "woah" Lawrence? He's still physically fit... but he's done away with his hair and is now sporting a freshly shaved Melon.

I wonder what his dimensions are? He seemed a lot smaller than his female dancing parter...

Anyhoo. The show sucks and its only further proof that Rome is burning.

Whit Stillman's BARCELONA

I'm about 3/4 thru Whit Stillman's: Barcelona. A few months ago I rented another movie he did (Metropolitan and I couldn't stop myself from recommending it to anyone willing to stop and lend me their ear.

I hoped his second film (Barcelona) would be equally as good... but it's not doing it for me for some reason. The dialogue is incredible but the film is not anywhere in league with Metropolitan.

If you run across this... no need to stop.

Sucks wang.

iTunes is the reason... that the Missfits look like this?

Just updated my iTunes music library with the latest "Album Cover Search"... didn't anticipate it finding many of the obscure albums I own, I was however surprised when it looked up my Misfits CD and found this.

Spent about an hour playing with the new iTunes update. I can't recall the last time Apple put out a software update this this good. User interface-wize I mean.

Flyboys

I'm going to catch an amazing amount of shit for this... but I really want to go see the Flyboys. I don't really want to catch it for any of the actors involved.. I wanna catch it because it involves airplanes and wwi dogfights.

I forget the last plane movie I caught in the movie theater... I think it was Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow... a film that would have been a lot cooler had they not farmed their special effects out to so many people...

Anyhoo... I'm going to go out of my way to see it. While I highly doubt that it will be as good as Iron Eagle (shut up, you fucking love that movie too) - It couldn't possibly be worse than Pearl Harbor.

A selection from the Vault: Comic Con

Every now and again I go through my computer and try to archive stuff I submitted to zines earlier in the decade. Ran across a story I submitted about my visit to the Motor City Comic Con.

Enjoy.

Comic Convention People
By Rollie Agado

It's that time of year again, the Motor City Comic Con and it looks like
yours truly will be in attendance for the third straight year. I don't
know what draw the comic con has over me... I seem to always learn a
little more about people and the world I live in when I attend these
things. The people who attend these things fall into all the cartoon
trappings we associate with adults who still read comics. As much as I
don't like generalizations, I find that it's a sure fire way to spur
conversation.
I'm of the opinion, that people who attend Comic Book Conventions fall
into two specific camps - then filter into 4 distinct categories. (Mind
you... I've only been to 2 of these in my lifetime). The 2 Camps simply
put... people are either “Bathers” or “Un-bathers”. The “Un-bathers”, as
you could imagine, are the most unpleasant of the bunch. They however give
the gathering a much-needed sense of "credibility". While I try to keep
myself at a safe distance from these people... I'd be lying if I said I
didn’t want to encounter the scent of "dustiness" every 45 minutes or so.
For me it makes the experience all the more real. Especially in the car
ride home when we extend our sleeves out to each other to share the
potency of a “Un-Bather” we purposely bushed up against. (It's kinda like
capturing elusive moss in a jungle). Yea... I'll leave it there.

The 4 Categories

1. The Button Downers - These guys are my favorite of the bunch. They
rarely say a word out loud, but you can tell what they are thinking by
looking at their facial expressions. These guys are incredibly put off by
large crowds and go out of their way to attend the comic convention at off
peak times. I haven't really picked up on their shopping habits. These
guys have come across in recent years as being well read. I usually scout
them picking up odd items and seem to pawn themselves off as appraisers at
these events. That's not to say that they won't purchase something! Unlike
the other attendees, they haven't spent the year saving up for the comic
con to splurge on “must have” items.

2. The Slobs - These guys are unapologetically nasty. They come in all
shapes, sizes and ages. Not only do they know it all... they're kind
enough to remind you. Deep down inside I think that everyone would like to
hold these things privately so that the Slobs couldn't attend...but
they're the driving force behind all of the purchases. I can safely say
that they contribute to 80% of the sales at these things. What's important
to note here... is the “Code of Cool”. I've never seen anyone go to these
things to buy the first issue of The Hulk. I think everyone kinda walks
around with that "Oh you don't own that already" musk, hanging off of
their bodies. Much, like record collectors do. I can't tell you how many
times I've passed on purchasing a record in person because I feared what
the clerk at the counter may think. That's what makes the Comic Con so
cool. Everyone knows that they can't peddle stuff people don't have, but
can't buy in public. So they cater to the "sweet tooth" of all parties.
Besides comic books there's also independent graphic artists (indie comics
really... I find their art to be really good. They take time in selecting
interesting paper stock and printing techniques – stories are usually bad
though), magazine collectors (everything from early issues of Rolling
Stone/Cream - to Playboy), book collectors (typically Sci-Fi, but their
collections are very impressive), films & film posters (just about
everything you could imagine... horror, classics, cartoons from the 70's
and 80's - all transferred properly to DVD. I find myself combing over
these things very carefully. I rarely buy anything though) Toys, water
pipes, WEAPONS! (Think Lord of the Rings stuff), etc. – I could go on and
on.

Where was I?

Oh yea... 4 categories.

3. The Regalia Clan - Many will tell you that these people come dressed up
for the costume contest. The costume contest is however held Saturday at
1:00PM, so it wouldn't explain why people come to all three days (which I
don't do by the way) dressed up as their favorite characters. This is
where I get a lot of my “dopey” lumps for guessing out loud the wrong
characters they're trying to portray. I'd say that 75% of the folk who
dress up come as bizarre Anime characters. Much to my surprise, people
will try their hardest to attend as a character they're most likely to
pull off, rather than a character they champion. This I applaud them for.
Who needs a chubby FLASH hanging around?
I'd only wish that they were more approachable though. It's very hard to
break them out of character. I've asked several of them questions before
and they've replied by whelping out a catch phrase, to which I respond
with a look of befuddlement. They then think that I'm unimpressed and
needless to say we end up getting off on the wrong foot.

4. "Oh, I'm with my friend" - This is the group that I'm apart of...sadly,
we're in the minority of these things. We're somewhat easy to spot because
we kinda shuffle along asking far too many questions. Knowing that this is
the "Super Bowl" of comic-geekery, we kinda congregate around the indie
artists. For some reason, the Slobs, the Button Downers and the Regalia
Clan - avoid these people. I mean…they make their way around their tables,
but for the most part they seem uninterested. This is where I make a
majority of my friends. Disinterested boyfriends and girlfriend’s hangout
by the empty chairs, tying to figure out from afar who the celebrity
guests are and comment out loud on how badly they've let themselves go.
Last year we were lucky... we got Billy D. Williams to come out. I forget
how much he charged for a signature, but it didn't matter. His publicist
assured me he wouldn't sign a 40oz of Colt 45 for me. Can you believe
that? The guy who flew the Millennium Falcon is too good to sign my bottle
of beer (”rolls eyes”). This year, my favorite Charlie's Angel - Kate
Jackson, is slated to make a celebrity appearance! As always, they posted
photos of their headshots - circa ‘76. Who knows what they'll look like
this weekend. Margot Kidder, who played "Louis" in Superman I - IV, is
also scheduled to be there. Sprinkle in a former WWF wrestler and that
just about rounds out the experience.

Rollie and his Co-Pilot

The month of August and the first week of September were very zany... With trips to South Texas, adjusting to a new city & job and sharing a living space with a sibling and getting chance to host some friends from out of State, it was very nice to have a quiet weekend at home.

Also very happy to have a sleepy weekend in San Antonio, was my loving pet Elliot Likely.

Much to my surprise he managed to sleep through a good portion of the day while I cursed out the Television. When he wasn't sleeping he chewed on his favorite toy while I scratched the back of his neck.

Normally, he goes out of his way to know the whereabouts of my Sister or my sister's dog Coco... but in recent days he's been more concerned about being by my side when ever I'm at home. Which is really heartwarming in a way because it would upset me immensely if I wasn't his favorite.

I attribute the recent love-fest to our scheduled walks in the afternoons and in the late evenings before bed.

While I know very little about dogs... I can't stress how easy it's been to have Elliot adjust to being an indoor dog. He's potty trained for the most part. He'll run to an exit if say "outside" and he'll yelp if he has to take a dump. I haven't had much luck having him identify specific toys... but I recently got him a quacking duck in hopes of helping him associate a specific stuffed animal when we play fetch.

Anyhoo... Miniature Schnauzers make awesome pets.

Thoughts on Bledsoe...

With an obscene amount of time in the Third Quarter... Drew Bledsoe was seen on the sideline dropping back frantically to correct some obvious discomfort. Do we sub him in for Romo? Nope... we leave him in for a number costly interceptions down the stretch because he couldn't plant any weight on his back foot.

NFL Kick Off Weekend

When I wasn't watching the Heavy Metal documentary on VH1 this afternoon, I spent a good part of my day getting laundry done and watching the NFL kick off their 2006 football season from the comfort of my living room couch and on my 65" High Definition TV.

I'm currently saddled up in bed watching the Cowboys & Jaguars in part because it's more comfortable to lay up in bed... but I'm here because FOX is currently not broadcasted by TimeWarner in HD.

In short... TimeWarner and the local FOX affiliate haven't agreed to terms and I'm pretty much fucked out of Cowboy/NFC games, the MLB playoffs and the Bowl Championship Series (I think) in HD.

My only option at the moment is DISH network. A no brainer for anyone who owns a HD TV, seeing how they offer 25+ channels in High Definition and FOX HD in my location. What sucks is... I'm going to have to rethink my current phone and internet options. In theory... I would only want to keep the Internet but I haven no idea what its going to set me back.

To complicate matters... there's the whole DISH VS Tivo lawsuit that could potentially cross out any DVR functionality pick up from Dish Network.

HD issues aside... Today my Fantasy Football season kicked off. My team is currently trailing by 20 points but I have a number of players playing tonight and Monday.

If all goes well, my Dallas Cowboys will find a way to win a tough one in Jacksonville and I'll make up enough points tonight and tomorrow on the Fantasy Front so that I can talk some mad smack on ParisTexans.com

On the Sabbath

While many are off enjoying enjoying the NFL kickoff weekend... I channel surfed my way by VH1 and nearly shat me' pants when I saw that they were showing Metal: A Headbangers Journey at NOON!

For those not in the know, A Headbangers Journey, is a documentary about the History of Heavy Metal.

Sam Dunn, a 30 year old anthropologist and life-long metal head - put his Ph.D to good use and tries to find out why Metal has such a bad rap.

Anthropological discoveries aside... there's fucking nothing cooler than having Venom, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Judas Priest, Morbid Angel and Celtic Frost not only discussed but having their sleeve work and music broadcasted on CABLE TV.

I heard number of good things about the documentary when it enjoyed its film festival circuit... but I wasn't within driving distance of any of the showings.

I'm about an hour into it and I'm enjoying it mightily. The production is top notch and the delivery (due greatly in part because of impeccable research) is far better than I expected. Perhaps I set the bar a little low... but we are talking about Metal here.

Admittedly, I haven't really seen any "new rocks" get turned over so far... There's going to be a bit on "Gender and Sexuality" thats about to start and I'm really curious to hear what they got to say about that. ACCEPT's "Balls to the Wall" is playing while longhaired mid-western boys are jumping on each other in Heavy Metal parking lots. I wonder if they'll explore the "boys club" and blatant homosexual aspects of the genre.

Steven Blush discussed this at length in the fabulous book (soon to be Video Documentary) American Hardcore: A Tribal History.

They're sorta dancing around the subject at the moment... perhaps it got cut short because of VH1. Hopefully it will run a little deeper on disc.

If missed it this afternoon... no worry. VH1 is going to re-broadcast it on the 14th of September at 11:00PM Eastern and at 1:00 PM EST on Friday, September 15th.

Its also available on DVD so if you have Netflix or Blockbuster, rent it there. I just put it Queue in hopes of learning about Heavy Metal after I stopped following it closely.

Edit: Dear Ronnie James Dio,
Enough with your insistence that you introduced "throwing the HORNS" to the world. You're a fabulous artist who has had a tremendous impact on me and many others... any argument on the subject of "who invented the throwing goats sign" is fucking laughable and has never been discussed amongst true metal heads. Who gives a shit? I mean, its like taking time out of your day to find out what Gary Cherone's solo project is these days.

.rollie who only looked this up to help his argument.

Update #3 : So I wrapped up my viewing of the METAL documentary a few hours ago and I've been thinking about a subject discussed before they wrapped up the documentary.

Admittedly, I stopped listening to Heavy Metal in the late 80's when my musical tastes began to expand into different genres. Had I stuck around a few more years I may have been swept away by a second wave of "Black Metal"...

Taking cues from the first wave of Black Metal, the second wave came out, replete with bleak band names, scary sleeve art and font selections that make you wonder why you even bother.

A guy discussed at length was Varg Vikernes (aka - Count Grishnackh) a guy who is currently in prison for the involuntary manslaughter of a former bandmate (Øystein Aarseth) and charged with Arson for a number of churches in Norway. All of which is very old news to those in the "know", but all very new to me.

When I was teen, my draw to Metal was the very obvious divide between it and the Church. Mind you... while I defended the genre for a number of years I sorta knew that most metal bands I listened to could never give a shit about the "satanic imagery" they bathed themselves in.

For some, simply singing about "darkside" wasn't enough so they took it to new extremes.

Church burning seems to be all the rage over there and I don't quite get it. I'll be the last person on earth to ever side with any religion but the destruction of buildings... places where people get together for communal experiences... that I just don't get.

I mean. If "church" didn't have all the hokery of virgin births and laughable miracles, I would totally be about being in a room with 40 or more people who are all about being positive about something.

The thoughtless destruction of their buildings make no sense to me.

Why not go out of your way and see that your local church loose its tax exemption?

Anyhoo... the documentary rocks VICIOUS WANG. I'm going to rent it in hopes of catching extra footage.

.666.

Nine Eleven - 5 years later

5 years ago today, I woke up and headed out to work like many others around the country. I attended a Built To Spill (scroll to the bottom) show the previous nite and I had plans to catch Jimmy Eat World on September 11th after work with a friend.

When I got in my car and drove up to work I threw in Soul Coughing's Ruby Vroom and listend to "Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago"... which to this day spooks the hell out of me because the lyrics of the song repeat the lyric -

"A man
drives a plane
into the
Chrysler building"

When I got to work... I sat down at my desk only to be interrupted by a fellow co-worker who said a plane flew into the Sears Tower. I quickly fired up the web browsers and turned on my radio only to find out that World Trade Center Towers in nYc were hit by 2 separate planes.

My inbox quickly began to fill with emails from friends around the states and nYc - confirming their whereabouts.

Minutes after the attack, there were a number of rumors about explosions throughout nYc and planes above the Midwest so work was cut short and I was sent home, like many to sort out what the fuck happened.

Since 9/11, a lot has changed. So much so... that it scares me into an Orwellian tizzy from time to time, but like many of you I manage to get up every morning and try to make the best of it.

If you're doing very little this morning, peep the "Loose Change" documentary.

Loose Change, the documentary.

Dreams

ok... so last night I had a dream that I hit it off with a girl at a
costume party. No biggie. at the party she had too much to drink
and she got sick. no biggie. anyhoo... she was very cool and I made
sure she was ok and got home safely.

a week later when arriving back from a trip of some kind I'm met by
her and 3 people. The first person I can't recall... but it was a
friend. The second person was her ex-boyfriend and still good
friend in standing. The person after that... was her rabbi.

The rabbi was weird because he wouldn't shake my hand. he kinda
looked like the little woman from Poltergeist but with a beard.

He kept on looking at me weird because I went in for a handshake...
do rabbi's shake hands? Because he looked offended that I didn't
know that Rabbi's shook hands or maybe he was upset because I wasn't
clearly jewish.

the next thing I know he asks me if I've ever been to temple.

I told him that I haven't... but I've been invited in the past. I
was afraid to sit in not knowing any of the rituals or where exactly
to sit.

the dream then fast forwards to Temple where I arrive. for some
reason I feel very lost in Temple. I can kinda see where the men are
sitting. I hear people talking but not in a familiar language.
Kinda like prayers or something.

The next thing I know the only seat I can find is within the women.
for some reason people have segregated and I'm with the girls. The
women are all wearing red.. the next thing I know everyone around me
starts singing the song"The continuing story of Bungalow Bill" - by the Beatles.

I woke up at 4:18 AM and was spooked out for the rest of the morning.

Dear friend and lawyer analyzed the dream and said -
"No, you're feeling the loss of Kathy and are subconsciously preparing for an ill advised marriage to someone you barely know who isn't suited to you"
"Temple is incidental to your choice of inappropriate mate, The Beatles song is incidental or relates to you killing your relationship with Kathy"

While a lot of what Ted said makes sense...  the Beatles song baffles me.

What is your take?

Labor Day Weekend - Wrap Up

I trust everyone had a relaxing Labor Day Weekend... I know I had a very memorable one. Spent Friday and Saturday night in South Texas spending some quality time with my parents, my grandmother (who I haven't seen in 8 or so years) and with Jaime and Chivo who were both in town to also see their families. I can't recall the last time Chivo, Jaime and I were all in the Valley at the same time but it was hella good to see them both and catch up with each other now that we're living very far away from each other.

I didn't get much accomplished today. I took a ferocious nap in the afternoon so that I could be alert for the Miami / Florida State football game tonight. There's 22 seconds left... FSU just intercepted a pass deep in Miami territory to secure what will be a 3 point victory over Miami in the Orange Bowl. Their first win in Miami since 1998.

Anyhoo time for bed. Oh. before I forget. I posted the 2nd September29th Podcast this evening. You can peep it by hitting "podcast" above or you can subscribe to it by hitting the iTunes button on the page.
